  Laiwu city is located in the central part of Shandong province. It covering an area of 2,246 square kilometers with a population of 1.26 million. In 2009, the total output value of the whole city is 46.1 billion yuan, increased by 12.5% compared with the same period of the last year; the local fiscal income is 3.27 yuan , grows by 8.1%; the fixed assets investment is 26.1 billion yuan , grows by 23.3%; the average annual disposable income of the urban resident is about 20 thousand yuan, the net income of the peasant is about 8 thousand yuan.

  Now Laiwu city exercises jurisdiction over Laicheng district, GangCheng District, three provincial level economic development zones and Xueye Tourism Resort. With a long history, Laiwu is full of vigor and vitality with modern development elements.

  Laiwu has remarkable geographic advantages. 70 kms away from Jinan, Laiwu is located in the economic circle of the provincial capital conurbation. Within its territory, there are 2 railways and 3 expressways. Its expressway density is at the top of China. The south line of Jinan-Qingdao expressway runs through the city. It takes only 1 hour to drive from Laiwu to Jinan – the provincial capital and 2 hours to Qingdao Harbor, and that means “people here can go flying in 1 hour and shipping in 2 hours.”

  Laiwu has prominent industrial advantages and is honored as a "Green City of Steel”. Laigang Group is one of the top 10 large-scale iron and steel enterprises with an annual output capability of 20 million tons. The iron and steel industry value take over 60% of the city’s GDP. It is the largest H-beam steel production base, the provincial base of iron and steel production and deep processing, the provincial featured assemble area of new material industry and the "National Industrialization Base of New Material".

  Laiwu is the provincial demonstration park of high-tech agriculture industry. It featured with green and organic ginger and garlic. Laiwu has 2000 years of ginger plantation history, its technology and quality are leading the way around China. The annual output of ginger and garlic is 500 thousand tons and export to Japan, Korea, Europe, America and other 20 countries and regions. Laiwu is honored as “China’s Hometown of Ginger”, “China’s Hometown of Chinese Prickly Ash”, and “China’s Hometown of Golden Peach”.

  Laiwu has 5000 years of black pig raising history. Laiwu black pig has such characteristic as high fertility, strong maternal performance, good meat quality, disease resistance, coarse fodder tolerance and hybridization. In 1982, it was listed into “China Pigs Chronicles” as the valuable gene bank of China’s local varieties and is honored as the “NO.1 Pig in North China”.

  Laiwu has obvious ecological advantages. Its plains, hills and mountain area cover one third respectively and the afforestation coverage in the mountain area is above 60%. There are Xueye Tourism Area which has perfect natural ecological landscape, Fanggan Village which is entitled the “No. 1 ecological village in China”, the Nine-dragon Grand Canyon which is the national AAAA level tourism area and other ecosystem tourism areas. Laiwu is “China Top Tourism City”, “National Gardening City”, “National Clean City”, permanent host city of CIAF (China International Airsports Fiesta) and the Airsports Base for FAI (Federal Airsports Institute). In October 2009, the 1st CIAF and 2nd National Airsports Meet held here successfully. Laiwu is becoming an airsports city of sports, technology, fashion and romance. Laiwu is also known as “the city of big love”.

  Laiwu has profound culture and history. Saint Confucius used to watch the performance of rites here. Laiwu is one of the birthplaces of Qi and Lu culture. The convergence of Qi and Lu culture here formed a regional culture featuring “paying great importance to morality, industry and commerce.” Laiwu has an iron-smelting history of more than 3,000 years and is always an important iron-smelting center in history. Laiwu has rich and varied folk arts. Laiwu Bangzi, also known as the local opera has been performed in Beijing several times and awarded the “No. 1 group in the world” by the Ministry of State Culture. Laiwu Tin Carving won the Silver medal in Panama World Fair in 1915. Laiwu Bangzi and Laiwu Tin Carving have been listed as the National Non-Material Cultural Heritages.
