While vast numbers of Chinese people are traveling to their hometowns for family reunions, a group of railway workers is busy maintaining a section of rail in Wuhan, Hubei province, to keep them moving.

"What we do is to make sure the stone slag laid under the rails is evenly and compactly distributed, so that trains can run on the line smoothly," said one of the workers, Yu Guolong.

The workers, employed by China Railway Wuhan Group Co, were maintaining the Shanghai-Chengdu high-speed line between Hankou and Hengdiandong in Wuhan.

To reduce the impact on train schedules, the group works at night — about five hours per shift. They strive to eliminate any problems to keep passengers safe.

"We will also improve the quality of the line so that passengers are comfortable," another worker, Liu Wanchao, said.

"Although it's hard to stay up late, people's safety and comfort is our biggest wish," Liu said.
