On October 6, Mr. Bach from Germany visited the Xun making techniques in the training base of Ningjin County Vocational Secondary Specialized School to feel the charm of traditional Chinese culture.
"Xun, as clay among the 'eight categories of musical instrument in ancient orchestra', has a history of 7,000 years. Its making techniques are particular, and the sound it produces is melodious. Ancient courts and folk people had the tradition of admiring Xun." Pu Shutang, the representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Tanghu Xun, explains to the international friend Xun making and history.
Xun needs to be tuned repeatedly in the making process, which is also the most time-consuming stage in this process. This requires Xun makers to not only understand pottery but also master music theory. Following the completion of Xun base is the hole making and initial tuning stage. Pu Shutong takes out the Xun, and introduces different tones in details according to the positions of the Xun holes.
Talking of the hole making process, Pu Shutang says to Mr. Bach, "The first one is its handle. It should be comfortable to hold. The five fingers can stretch fully and move freely on it. If the hole is not in the right position, the posture of holding the Xun won't look good. When we make it, we can't make the hole big enough at once. If the hole is made too big at the beginning, the sound played is not correct. If you make the hole too big at the beginning, you will have to fix it. So we need to make the big smaller at the beginning, and enlarge it bit by bit to achieve the best effect we need."
The Xun making techniques amaze Mr. Bach. After being processed, a small piece of mud can be made into an oriental musical instrument that can produce unique sounds. He sincerely exclaims, "Chinese culture is really profound. I will recommend this amazing Chinese instrument to my family and friends, and I hope the Xun culture can be passed on forever."
