As some parts of China recently experienced high temperatures and drought, there has been a surging demand for agricultural irrigation and the country's power grid has thus been put under great pressure.

Against such a backdrop, the power supplier in Laiwu district of Jinan, East China's Shandong province has ramped up efforts to ensure a stable power supply and safeguard food security.

The State Grid's Laiwu Power Supply Co said it has dispatched 18 special teams to inspect the key electrical facilities for agricultural irrigation. Measurements of electrical load and temperature are conducted once during the day and once at night.

Meanwhile, volunteers from the company regularly visit local farmlands to resolve the electrical hazards and guide the farmers to utilize electricity more safely.

The company said all the local power supply stations have staff members on duty 24 hours a day, aimed at promptly responding to the farmers' requests.

"No matter what problem we encounter, we just call the power supplier and it will send someone over right away, even late at night," said Gao Hongbo, a local villager.

Besides, the company said it has opened up "green channels" for irrigation system expansion projects, so as to accelerate the construction speed.

According to the company, it has so far built 14 new transformers and 9 kilometers of new 10 kV transmission lines across the district, thereby better supporting agricultural irrigation.

The local government said agriculture is a major industry for Laiwu and the company's recent moves is expected to help secure a bumper crop this year.
