After the beginning of winter every year, 18000 acres of reeds in the Matahu area of Huantai welcome the harvest season. Cutting reeds is a hard and tiring job, and young people nowadays are unwilling to do it. Only some elderly people are still sticking to this industry. In recent years, mechanical equipment has been used to harvest reeds in reed fields, which can cut more than 20 acres of land every day. The combination of traditional methods and modern machinery greatly improves harvesting efficiency.
Reed, as the raw material for reed weaving, is the main economic source of Matahu District, feeding generations of villagers. In recent years, driven by local leading enterprises, reed weaving has evolved from the initial self-produced and sold, scattered operation of each household to a connected, centralized and orderly industrial operation mode, forming a "one-stop" income increasing system for reed processing, sales, and exports. The people in the lake area are engaged in reed weaving at home, achieving employment at their doorstep. The small reed weaving has created a path to increase income and become prosperous.
