The "Hua Shang Si Hai·Li Yun Chuan Qing"(Elegant Chinese Attire: Spreading Cultural Rhyme Worldwide)Global Chinese Student Hanfu Festival kicked off at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT),aiming to elevate traditional Hanfu as a bridge for cross-cultural dialogue among young people globally.Co-organized by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) under the Ministry of Education and BIFT,with support from the Caoxian People’s Government in Shandong Province and the Luoyang Hanfu Research Institute in Henan Province, the launch ceremony marked the beginning of a series of events designed to showcase Hanfu’s global appeal and cultural significance.

In his opening remarks, a representative emphasized,“Hanfu is a vital cultural symbol of the Chinese civilization and an emotional bond connecting Chinese communities worldwide.Through initiatives like this festival,we hope to establish Hanfu as a carrier for humanistic exchanges between Chinese and international youth, highlighting the beauty of cultural integration while fostering friendship and mutual growth through cross-cultural interactions. The CSC looks forward to collaborating with BIFT to innovate Hanfu’s inheritance, allowing the world to appreciate not only the aesthetic charm of Hanfu but also the profound values it embodies.”

The festival, which aligns with efforts to promote Chinese traditional culture globally, will feature a diverse program spanning months.Key activities include a global Chinese student Hanfu fashion show,a worldwide Hanfu display day for international students, cultural lectures, knowledge quizzes, and design competitions. A central focus is encouraging overseas Chinese students to organize local Hanfu events in their host countries, inviting foreign peers and educators to engage with the attire’s historical symbolism and artistic heritage.By using Hanfu as a cultural totem, the initiatives seek to translate the rich connotations of Chinese civilization—such as harmony, elegance, and craftsmanship—into accessible, engaging experiences for global audiences.

Hanfu, characterized by its timeless silhouettes, intricate patterns, and regional variations, has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, both at home and abroad.Beyond its role as a fashion statement, it has emerged as a cultural ambassador, with Chinese students often donning Hanfu at international events to share their heritage. The festival capitalizes on this trend, providing a structured platform for cross-border cultural exchange. For instance, the design competition will invite participants to reinterpret Hanfu elements through a modern lens, blending traditional aesthetics with contemporary fashion trends, thereby demonstrating the clothing’s adaptability and universal appeal.

“Today’s launch is more than an event;it’s a cultural movement,”noted a BIFT professor specializing in ethnic fashion studies.“Hanfu’s global journey isn’t about imposing a single narrative but inviting the world to appreciate its stories. When international students wear Hanfu or collaborate on its design, they become co-creators in this cultural dialogue, breaking stereotypes and building understanding.”

The festival’s geographical reach is intentional, with organizers partnering with Chinese student associations in over 50 countries to coordinate local activities. In places like the United States, the United Kingdom,Australia, and Southeast Asian nations, student groups plan to host Hanfu-themed workshops, parades, and exhibitions, often collaborating with local cultural institutions. These grassroots efforts aim to demystify Hanfu, showcasing its evolution from ancient dynasties to its modern reinterpretation, while emphasizing its relevance in today’s globalized world.

As the festival unfolds, hope it will not only celebrate Hanfu’s aesthetic legacy but also inspire a new generation of global citizens to embrace cultural diversity. By centering youth participation, the events seek to prove that tradition can be a dynamic, shared language—one that transcends borders and builds bridges in an increasingly divided world.
