Recently, a Chinese cultural event took place at the Oryol Academy of Administration in Russia.Led by Caoxian-born student Miao Xinyu, the activity introduced traditional lanterns and calligraphy to Russian students, creating the bridge for cultural exchange.
Red Chinese lanterns in different styles hung from the ceiling, casting warm light over the room.Beside them, calligraphy scrolls with characters like "Fu" (blessing) and "Jixiang" (auspiciousness) showed the beauty of Chinese writing.A display on the wall showed how lanterns developed from ancient oil lamps to modern festival decorations. On each desk, inkstones and rice paper waited, bringing the smell of ink into the classroom.
Miao explained, "Lanterns were once for light, but now they mean reunion, like during Spring Festival." She pointed out the bamboo frames for durability and red paper for good luck.Talking about calligraphy, she said, "The character 'Fu' combines 'blessing' and 'food', wishing for a happy life."Russian student Andrey touched a lantern's bamboo frame, while Lena tried writing "心" (heart) with a brush, focused and curious.
This student-led event showed how culture comes alive through experience. As Russian students tried calligraphy and felt the lanterns, Chinese culture moved from books to real life.It proved that traditions connect people best when shared through simple, hands-on moments.
In the classroom, laughter and the rustle of paper mixed as students shared their first calligraphy works. The lanterns glowed not just as decorations, but as signs of shared interest.Such events prove that young people can build deep cultural connections—one brushstroke and one lantern at a time.
